Iranian Researchers Offer New Seismic Behavioral Model of Concrete Buildings

TEHRAN (ANA)- A group of Researchers at the Amirkabir University of Technology presented a new behavioral model of concrete buildings during earthquakes.

The concrete shear wall model is an efficient and optimal seismic-resistant system that provides sufficient stiffness, resistance, and ductility for buildings against the loads caused by earthquakes.

Shear walls are typically light-framed or braced wooden walls with shear panels, reinforced concrete walls, reinforced masonry walls, or steel plates.

They are generally used in high-rise buildings subject to lateral wind and seismic forces.

The group, led by Mohammad Sadeq Barkhordari, a professor of civil engineering, announced that past research has shown that these walls have complex behaviors.

Barkhordari added that numerical models in engineering software allow engineers to overcome the difficulty of repetitive and detailed manual calculations and examine the dynamic response of a wide range of structures.

Different models that are used to analyze the complex behavior of structures (such as beams, columns, concrete shear walls, etc.) often provide inaccurate results, which are in little agreement with laboratory results.

Therefore, the need for a simple and fast numerical model that has the necessary accuracy and efficiency was felt, which was used in this project.

Considering that there are many faults in Iran and these faults are the main cause of earthquakes in different cities of the country, it is possible to use a new numerical model to determine the response of concrete buildings with shear walls with high accuracy and in the shortest time.

This is very important in the seismic strengthening of concrete buildings before an earthquake, and it can be effective in reducing financial and life losses after an earthquake.
